The High rise figure or are we all just fashion victims?

July 18, 2008
Most of us don't actually stop and think about what we wear or if we actually agree with the waist line of our pants. We kind of go with the flow, put on whatever is fashionable or popular at the time, whether baggie, low rise, high rise or skinny. I would like to consider myself a person who actually understands fashion, who has a strong sense of aesthetics, which assists me in deciding if something looks well and tasteful. But after acquiring an extremely high rise pair of shorts two days ago, after swearing that would never happen to me (I think high rise pants are for tall skinny girls with long legs), I'm beginning to doubt myself. Am I a fashion victim just like every common girl on the street? Don't I have a mind of own? Do the fashion magazines I read, believing that they merely supply me with inspiration of what's trendy and fashionable, actually dictate what I will buy the following morning? This may seem like simple minded naivety, but I actually thought that I was different. Come to think of it, I usually hate things when they come out at first, thinking that they would never look good on me, then ending up having 10 pairs of them in my closet. Take the case of tights and leggings for example. When it become fashionable to walk around in leggings, tee-shirt and boots, it seemed to me as if one the most horrific and ugliest horrors of the 80', had come back to haunt me from my childhood. Perhaps it looks flattering if you look like twiggy, but if you don't it usually emphasizes things you would like to hide like your behind or your camel toe. If you look in my closet today, you may find 20 different kinds of leggings and tights in all kinds of shapes and colors, and yes, I actually think they look super nice on me.
